Characterizations of some types of linear independence of integer translates.


Many properties of the system of integer translates of a square integrable function can be completely described by properties of a periodic function associated with it, called the periodization function. Systems of integer translates arise in the context of wavelet analysis and, more generally, in the theory of shift invariant spaces. We shall discuss various types of linear independence of such systems and we shall give characterizations in terms only of the properties of the periodization function.
